About the Role
Transmission Dynamics is looking for an experienced Senior Instrumentation & Field Applications Engineer to join our growing multidisciplinary engineering team.
This is a highly specialised engineering role supporting the development, deployment and commissioning of advanced sensing and condition monitoring systems used on critical infrastructure across the world.
Working at the intersection of mechanical engineering, instrumentation and data acquisition, you’ll lead the installation and validation of sophisticated measurement systems, including strain gauges, accelerometers, displacement sensors and other specialist instrumentation. Your work will help customers better understand the behaviour of complex engineering assets, enabling predictive maintenance and improving safety, reliability and operational performance.
This is far more than a traditional field engineering role. You’ll be involved throughout the engineering lifecycle, from developing instrumentation strategies and supporting product development at our headquarters through to installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and customer support on site.
As our technologies continue to evolve into new industries and international markets, every project presents new engineering challenges and opportunities to apply your expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the installation, configuration and commissioning of specialist instrumentation systems for customer projects in the UK and internationally.
- Design and implement instrumentation solutions using strain gauges, accelerometers, displacement sensors, thermocouples and other specialist measurement equipment.
- Plan and undertake complex strain gauge installations, including surface preparation, bonding, wiring and environmental protection for demanding operating environments.
- Configure data acquisition systems and validate instrumentation performance prior to customer deployment.
- Support the development, testing and validation of new sensing technologies and monitoring solutions.
- Work closely with Mechanical Engineers, Electronics Engineers, Software Developers and Data Analysts throughout project delivery.
- Provide technical support during installation, commissioning and acceptance testing.
- Troubleshoot instrumentation, data acquisition and measurement issues both remotely and on customer sites.
- Prepare technical documentation, installation records and commissioning reports.
- Support customer demonstrations, engineering investigations and prototype development.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of instrumentation techniques, installation methodologies and engineering best practice.
About You
You’re an experienced engineer who enjoys working with precision instrumentation and solving challenging engineering problems.
You take pride in producing high-quality technical work and enjoy the variety that comes from combining practical engineering with customer-facing project delivery. Whether you’re installing strain gauges on critical structures, configuring data acquisition systems or supporting engineering investigations, you’re motivated by delivering accurate, reliable engineering solutions.
You’ll also enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues across multiple engineering disciplines and be comfortable representing Transmission Dynamics professionally when working with customers both in the UK and internationally.
Desirable Skills & Experience
We’re looking for experienced engineers with a strong practical engineering background. Whilst you don’t need to meet every point below, experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation, Mechatronics or a related engineering discipline.
- Practical experience installing and using engineering instrumentation within industrial, research or testing environments.
- Experience applying strain gauges, including surface preparation, bonding techniques, wiring, testing and validation.
- Understanding of engineering measurement principles including strain, vibration, displacement, temperature and acceleration.
- Experience configuring and operating engineering data acquisition systems.
- Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent practical engineering skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally when required.
- Experience of condition monitoring or structural health monitoring systems.
- Experience with high-speed data acquisition and signal conditioning.
- Knowledge of vibration analysis, modal testing or structural dynamics.
- Experience working within rail, aerospace, defence, energy or other safety-critical engineering sectors.
- Familiarity with ultrasonic sensing technologies.
- Experience supporting product development, testing or validation programmes.
- Experience working with Industrial IoT or intelligent sensing technologies.
- Knowledge of instrumentation calibration and uncertainty principles.
Why This Role is Different
This isn’t a maintenance or service engineering position.
You’ll work with advanced instrumentation systems that are helping transform the way critical infrastructure is monitored around the world. From installing precision strain gauges on high-speed trains to commissioning intelligent monitoring systems on industrial assets, your work will directly support the development of technologies that enable customers to predict failures before they happen.
You’ll also be involved long before equipment reaches site, working alongside our engineering teams to develop new sensing solutions, validate products and continually improve our technologies. The combination of hands-on engineering, international project work and multidisciplinary collaboration makes this a genuinely unique opportunity for an experienced instrumentation engineer.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for engineers who are:
- Passionate about precision engineering and instrumentation.
- Naturally curious and methodical problem-solvers.
- Comfortable working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Calm and confident when working on customer sites.
- Organised, proactive and quality-focused.
- Enthusiastic about travel and working on diverse engineering projects.
- Motivated by developing innovative engineering solutions with real-world impact.
