Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role

Due to continued business growth, multiple international contract awards and increasing demand for our innovative engineering solutions, Transmission Dynamics is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design & Projects Engineer to join our expanding multidisciplinary engineering team.

This is a varied and rewarding role that combines mechanical design with technical project ownership. We’re not looking for a traditional Project Manager; instead, we’re seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer who enjoys taking responsibility for delivering engineering projects from initial customer discussions through to successful contract delivery.

Every project is different. One week you may be designing bespoke mounting systems for sensors on high-speed trains, the next developing entirely new concepts for industrial monitoring applications across sectors including rail, mining, energy and defence.

Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. As our technologies continue to evolve, you’ll have the opportunity to develop entirely new products while adapting and enhancing existing solutions to meet emerging customer needs around the world.

Key Responsibilities

You’ll work closely with Mechanical Engineers, Electronics Engineers, Software Developers and Data Scientists, leading the mechanical aspects of projects throughout their lifecycle.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing mechanical concepts and translating customer requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Producing high-quality 2D and 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
  • Designing bespoke mechanical systems and adapting existing products for new applications across multiple industries.
  • Managing the technical delivery of engineering projects from concept through to successful contract completion.
  • Coordinating internal engineering activities to ensure hardware, software and data deliverables meet project specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Monitoring project progress, maintaining technical documentation and ensuring key milestones are achieved.
  • Liaising directly with customers to understand requirements, develop technical solutions and manage day-to-day engineering communications.
  • Supporting manufacturing, assembly, installation, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
  • Working alongside our Data Analytics team to ensure customers receive meaningful engineering outputs, including condition monitoring reports and our proprietary Heartbeat asset health reports.
  • Supporting testing, calibration, data acquisition and engineering analysis where required.
  • Contributing to the continuous development of new products, sensing technologies and monitoring solutions.

About You

You’re a practical engineer who enjoys solving real-world engineering challenges and seeing your ideas become reality.

You enjoy taking ownership, working directly with customers and collaborating across multiple engineering disciplines to deliver innovative solutions. You’re equally comfortable designing a component in CAD, discussing technical requirements with a customer, coordinating engineering activities across internal teams or helping resolve challenges during installation and commissioning.

Most importantly, you’re naturally curious, enthusiastic and excited by the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies that make a genuine difference to critical infrastructure around the world.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design or a related discipline.
  • Strong mechanical design experience within a professional engineering environment.
  • Excellent proficiency with at least one professional CAD package (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, tolerances and Design for Manufacture (DfM).
  • Excellent understanding of structural mechanics, including loading, stress, fatigue and strain.
  • Ability to manage multiple engineering activities simultaneously whilst maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills with confidence working directly with customers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • A proactive, organised approach with the ability to take ownership of technical projects from concept through to delivery.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience of instrumentation, sensors or condition monitoring systems.
  • Experience using strain gauges or other engineering measurement instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of vibration, resonance and structural dynamics.
  • Experience designing products for harsh industrial environments.
  • Knowledge of ultrasonic sensing technologies.
  • Experience supporting installation and commissioning activities.
  • Understanding of engineering project planning and technical project coordination.

Why This Role is Different

This isn’t a role where you’ll spend years refining the same product.

You’ll work on a constant stream of technically diverse projects, designing bespoke engineering solutions for customers operating some of the world’s most critical infrastructure. From high-speed rail to mining equipment and renewable energy systems, you’ll help develop technologies that improve safety, reliability and operational performance across multiple industries.

You’ll also have the opportunity to own projects beyond the design stage, working directly with customers, supporting installations, collaborating with software and data specialists, and helping shape the next generation of Transmission Dynamics products.

If you enjoy variety, responsibility and solving genuinely challenging engineering problems, you’ll find plenty to get your teeth into.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for engineers who are:

  • Passionate about mechanical design and engineering innovation.
  • Naturally curious and enthusiastic problem-solvers.
  • Comfortable taking ownership of technical projects.
  • Organised and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Collaborative team players who enjoy working across engineering disciplines.
  • Confident communicating with customers and colleagues alike.
  • Motivated by developing practical solutions that make a real-world impact.
