Transmission Dynamics presents

Machines in Motion

A Christmas Lecture for curious minds

How did humanity progress from making things move to creating machines that can understand and control their own motion?

  • Presented by: Professor Jarek Rosinski
  • Date: Tuesday 22nd December 2026 · 10:30-12:00
  • Venue: The Glasshouse, Gateshead
  • Audience: Ages 11–17 and accompanying adults

Machines in Motion is the story of one of humanity’s greatest engineering journeys. We first learned to make things move. Then we learned to understand movement, measure it and control it. Today, we are creating machines that can sense their own motion, interpret what is happening around them and respond.

This Christmas, Transmission Dynamics invites you to explore the extraordinary science of motion through ambitious live demonstrations, music, and real engineering investigations.

What to Expect

At The Glasshouse this Christmas, the stage will become a living engineering laboratory, where motion is magnified, vibration is given form and the hidden behaviour of machines is revealed.

See Engineering in Motion

Discover how gears, belts, chains, bearings, shafts and couplings transmit movement, transform force and make machines possible.

Make the Invisible Visible

See how machines bend, twist and vibrate, and how engineers measure movements too small or fast for the eye to detect.

Investigate with Engineers

Look closely, listen differently and consider what a machine’s movement might reveal about what is happening inside it.

Explore Intelligent Motion

See concepts come together in a humanoid robot capable of balancing, moving and responding to the world around it.

Who is it for?

For curious minds aged 11–17

Created for young people curious about how the world works, whether fascinated by robotics or encountering engineering beyond the classroom for the first time.

No specialist knowledge is needed – complex ideas are accessible without removing the science that makes them interesting.

Professor Jarek Rosinski

Engineer, inventor, founder of Transmission Dynamics, and Professor in Practice at Durham University.

Jarek brings decades of vibroacoustics and machine dynamics experience to reveal how centuries of mechanical discovery have led to modern intelligent machines.

Created by Transmission Dynamics

Transmission Dynamics is an engineering company based in Cramlington, Northumberland. For 30 years, its engineers have designed technology used by industries around the world. Operating at the forefront of innovation in the fields of AI, Engineering, and Technology, its cutting-edge solutions can be found in use across the globe – and understanding how machines move and behave is part of their everyday work.

That experience gives the team the knowledge and equipment to show the science of motion through real demonstrations. The aim is to bring families in the North East a Christmas lecture worth getting excited about, where ambitious science comes to life on stage.

Supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is a global professional community dedicated to improving the world through engineering. Alongside supporting engineers throughout their careers, it works to inspire the next generation and encourage an interest in how the world around us works.

Its support for Machines in Motion helps bring that ambition to the stage, inviting families across the North East to discover the ideas, science and possibilities behind machines.

Questions from Parents & Carers

No. Machines in Motion is designed to introduce complex ideas in a way that is accessible to young people without removing the real science and engineering behind them.

Not at all. The event is for anyone who is curious about movement, machines, robotics, technology or how the world works.

Yes. Parents, carers and family members are very welcome. Although the lecture is designed with 11–17-year-olds in mind, there will be plenty for adults to enjoy too.

Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

The lecture will be interactive and the audience will be invited to take part in demonstrations during the lecture, but participation is entirely optional.

The lecture will include demonstrations involving moving machinery, sound and lighting. Some moments may be louder than others, but we are not planning any excessively loud or intense effects.

Yes. Zomet, Transmission Dynamics’ humanoid robot, will form part of the lecture’s exploration of intelligent motion.

Yes. The Glasshouse is step-free throughout, with accessible entrances, performance spaces and toilets. Accessible parking is available for Blue Badge holders. For full accessibility information or to discuss specific requirements, please visit The Glasshouse’s Access Information page.

Yes. Photography and filming will take place during the event for Transmission Dynamics’ communications and promotional purposes.
